If you already have the 3rd generation crossover, there is little need to change it.

There is also a inductor in series with the woofer (1.6 mH, 0.28 ohms DCR). There is also a 0.45 mH inductor with a 0.45 DCR in parallel with the tweeter. This version uses a 16 uF main series cap, a 3 ohm series resistor, and an 8 uF bypass cap for the 3ohm resistor when in the Extended mode. I have tried them all, and prefer the sound of the third and last version, found in 1975-77 production. The grill frames are of Masonite and if you mirror image, just flip one over.Ĭrossover: There are at least three crossover configurations for the original large Advent. The stretch material from Parts Express is acoustically transparent and with a piece of the black gauzy stuff underneath, works very well. I also found that some brands of "stretch grill cloth" are not acoustically transparent as claimed. For replacement grill fabric, I have found that a finer texture burlap works well and is available from your local fabric shop in colors close to the original. It is not needed over the woofer, so only the tweeter needs to have it and a small piece will suffice. It is important to the sound of the tweeter and needs to be retained. Underneath the linen is a layer of black gauzy material similar to book muslin. It is acoustically quite transparent and nearly impossible to find an exact replacement. Grills: The Advent's original grill fabric is an open weave beige linen. It has only a slight effect on the sound, but I thought it should be done after I weakened one front panel by the mirror imaging. This prevents the cabinet's front and back panels from "breathing" due to heavy bass and considerably stiffens the panels. I have also added a front to back brace made from a piece of 1 1/4" hardwood dowel held in place with #12 x 2.5" flat head screws. This does help the imaging if the speakers are placed with the tweeters toward the center (left speaker has the tweeter to the right, right speaker has the tweeter to the left) I have since moved one tweeter to the opposite side to have a mirror image pair.

Even so, the cabinets do not sound different than the pair of stock walnut veneer originals they were copied from. They are of MDF instead or particle board. They were built by Kirby Gaal and have fancy walnut veneer matched on all four sides and on both cabinets. I thought it might be useful to other Advent owners to have me recount all that I've done to these as a guide to their mods.Ĭabinets: Mine happen to be custom made replicas of original (1970-1977) large Walnut Advents with the Masonite ring woofer and the tweeter with the 4" x 4" Masonite plate. In the process, I rewired the tweeter switch (again), putting the Advents back to my best configuration. I have taken this down and returned to just the Advents which I prefer. Posted by Bold Eagle (A) on Januat 12:11:13Īs some of you may recall, I was using a bi-amped system based on a pair of PSB B15 mini-monitors, and Advents as the woofers.
